We serve a free community meal three days a week. On the average we serve 35 - 60 people and average about 8000 meals each year. All of our food is donated by individuals, churches, or other organizations. This is an important part of caring for the body of each individual that walks through our doors, but it can also enhance their ability to deal with mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual aspects of their lives.
Having enough food to eat can often change the way an individual will respond to a life situation, including making a difference in whether or not they will commit a crime. One individual's testimony was that he had been without food for three days, and recently just lost everything. He had no identification, job, money, clothing, or even a place to live. One day while walking down an alley, he was contemplating how to steal some food from a local drugstore. As he was making out his plans in his mind, a woman, who called herself Saint Righteous, walked up to him and told him that he shouldn't to what he was about to do because it could cost him more than what he had already lost. She told him to go to his church. He explained to the woman, "I don't have a church. I haven't been in a church since I was little." She told him that yes he had been there just recently and he should go there to get help. As he contemplated her words, the only place he could think of that even resembled church, was our facility. So, he came by and found two of our volunteers getting ready to sit down to a meal of macaroni and cheese. They invited him in and since that time he has gone on to become an active volunteer in the community, helping those in need.
